CFO discovers hidden assets while reviewing financial information with a CEO to support company growth.
Sometimes the greatest opportunities for growth are already inside the business—they simply haven't been recognized yet.

A True Story from an Early CFO–CEO Engagement

Early in my career, a founder and CEO approached me with a familiar challenge.

His company had a successful product.

It had growing customer demand.

It had an experienced management team.

What it didn't appear to have were the assets he believed were needed to support the financing required for expansion.

Rather than immediately discussing financing, I spent the next several months learning the business from the inside out.

I immersed myself in the bookkeeping.

I analyzed the accounting.

I learned the operations.

I wanted to understand how the company actually created value, how customers purchased its products, and why the business had been successful.

Only after developing that understanding did something unexpected emerge.

The business already possessed valuable assets.

They simply weren't being recognized as assets that could help support the company's growth objectives.

Working with the CEO and the company's professional advisors, we developed a strategy that enabled those strengths to support the financing needed for expansion.

The financing allowed the company to move forward with its growth plans. The expansion proved successful, and the CEO earned the respect and appreciation of his partners for helping lead the company to its next stage of growth. He later shared that success with me in a way I never expected, but that was never the objective. The real reward was watching a business achieve goals it once believed were beyond reach.

That experience shaped the way I viewed CFO Advisory forever.

Over the years, I've learned that a CFO discovers hidden assets only after developing a deep understanding of how a business truly creates value.

Sometimes the greatest opportunities for growth aren't created by finding new assets.

Sometimes they're discovered by recognizing the value that's already inside the business.

Executive Takeaway

If you're a founder, CEO, or board member who believes your company lacks the assets needed to support future growth, it may be worth asking a different question:

Have we fully identified the assets our business already possesses?

In my experience, the answer isn't always as obvious as it first appears.
